h a n n a h r o s e ! if i decide i'm the girl to change the world i can do it any time. opportunities, right in front of me, and the choice is all mine! why not try everything? why stop? reach for any dream! i can rock, 'cause it's my life and i'm just fine.
hannah pulled at her hair, finally happy with it. it was down, as always, and straight, as always. parts were sticking up, as was her usual style. she didn't have much make up on, just eyeliner, mascara, a bit of eye shadow, lip gloss and a touch of foundation. she was wearing a very short black dress, so short it barely covered the top of her toned legs. on her feet were black pumps, and around her neck were various sparkling necklaces.
she was ready to go, and she left her dorm without her key; she hoped someone would be in to let her back in, as she hated taking her key with her when she was going out. she would probably end up losing it, as she was a little clumsy sometimes, or worse yet, someone could steal it from her. or, of course, she could drunkenly hand it over. she was stupid like that sometimes. especially when drunk.
tonight, she was off to the ministry of sound, probably the best club around. and it was quite near the academy, within walking distance. hannah kept herself fit walking around london. though only because she didn't feel comfortable stuck on a tube with a load of strangers, packed like sardines, in the middle of the night. how could anyone feel comfortable? especially someone as small as hannah.
reaching the doors of the club, she flashed the bouncer her best smile and her fake ID, and he let her in. the music hit her like a ton of bricks. like a great sounding ton of bricks. she immediently headed to the dance floor and started dancing.

Break out! Break out!
Jesse had made a mistake coming here, no doubt about it. It wasn’t that he wasn’t personable. Quite the contrary. If you got him talking in a situation like this he might never shut up. No. He had other issues. One, he couldn’t dance. Two, he was clearly out of place. And three, he didn’t know a damn person in the place. Naturally it had seemed like a good idea to stop by and see if the place needed a house drummer, but now he felt odd.
Naturally, in the face of conflict, Jesse did what came instinctively to him. He retreated. The door was only a hundred or so paces away… once he crossed the dancefloor. There was no way around it, much to his dismay, which only left going through it. Taking a deep breath, he started to work his way across. Ducking here, weaving there. It was like a puzzle or a maze of sorts.
He was only sidetracked once. Some girl grabbed his arm and began to demand a dance. Jesse just shook his head and tried to get away. The girl was cute, sure, but he had so many reasons to want out of this place. Afterall, what guy felt comfortable in a situation like this. Well, perhaps there were a few, but Jesse was, most definitely not one of them. He felt awkward and out of place.
Finally reaching the other side of the dancefloor, Jesse shook his head and took two steps forward. On that second step he collided with a person smaller than himself. Before seeing who it was his mouth was running. “Jeez. I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention. It was completely my fault.” Could the girl even hear his apology?

"ooft!" hannah felt someone run into her. someone a lot bigger than her. despite her pretty good balance, hannah felt herself falling over. she landed in a heap on the floor, and she quickly pulled her dress down so no one caught a glimpse of her underwear. she got back up quickly, and looked at who had knocked her over. she vaugely recognised him from the academy, but she don't think she knew his name.
he was saying something, but hannah could barely hear him. she could lip read well enough to make out the word " sorry " but that was about it. he looked like he was about to leave, or trying to, when he wasn't busy running into innocent people. she grinned at him and grabbed his arm. "come on, i'll buy you a drink." she didn't know why she was buying him a drink, it probably should be the other way around, considering he had knocked her over, but regardless, hannah was feeling generous.
she kept hold of his arm and tugged at it; pulling him in the direction of the bar. the guy who she was dragging had probably been trying to leave, but she still dragged him into the club. after knocking her over, the least he could do was humour her by letting her buy him a drink, for which ever reason, a reason hannah herself didn't actually know. "come on!" she shouted, unsure if he could actually hear her or not.

Break out! Break out!
Seeing her get up, Jesse mentally slapped himself. He couldn't at least help her up? His parents had clearly taught him nothing. Amidst his apology, however, she grabbed his arm and started pulling. "But I... uh..." Truth be told, the boy couldn't think up an excuse fast enough. His feet had already given in to the smaller girls demands and were unglued from the floor. He sighed and nodded.
Something about this wasn't right. Shouldn't he have been buying her a drink or something like that? He shrugged and went along with her over towards the bar. In an attempt to get her attention, he yelled a greeting. It was, as expected, lost in the sounds of the club around them. This was going to be pointless if they had no way to communicate. Jesse thought about possibly writing it down, but who carried a piece of paper and a pen nowadays? Then he had a genius idea.
Jesse dug in his pocket and held up a finger to the girl, the universal signal for "hang on a second." With a smile on his face he retrieved his cell phone from its home in his pants pocket. Opening a new text message, he typed into the body of the text, "I'm jesse." Turning the phone towards the other girl he smiled and waited for her to respond, somehow. Maybe she'd find something more convenient.

hannah tried to shout to the barman what it was she wanted to drink, but she didn't know if he heard her. she didn't know what this guy drank, or indeed, if he even drank at all. if he didn't, he certainly would now. hannah shouted at the barman again, leaning across the bar to make herself heard. the barman nodded his head and went off to get the drinks; hopefully the vodka she had asked for. though with the noise, god only knew what the barman had heard, and hannah wasn't sure what they would end up with. even her voice couldn't compete with the music.
she turned back to face the guy, and grinned at him. he held a finger up, telling her to wait, so she did. she watched him as he pulled his phone out and typed something in. was this the time to be texting someone? a little rude. but then it made sense as he held the phone out and hannah took it, reading the words "i'm jesse" on the phone's screen.
quite a smart idea, if hannah said so herself. she knew she certainly wouldn't be able to come up with something like that. she typed a reply. "hannah. don't i know you from somewhere? you go to fates, right?" hannah was pretty certain she had seen jesse around the academy somewhere. jesse didn't seem the type to be confused with someone else, but hannah could be wrong. she handed the phone back as the barman passed the drinks over. she paid him, and passed one bottle to jesse, then took a sip from her own. better pace myself, she thought. hangovers and dance classes do not mix.

Break out! Break out!
Jesse watched as she read his message and started typing back. Apparently she had more to say than just her name. Maybe he would read her life story. He really hoped she wasn't one of those girls. They bothered him actually. Too trusting too soon. Then again, maybe the girl just had an unusually long name. It happened. As if the timing were perfect, the girl handed back his phone just as the bartender reappeared. Taking his phone, Jesse had no time to read it before he was handed a drink. With a slight shrug he took a drink then read her message.
I'm hannah. Don't i know you from somewhere? You go to fates, right?
Picking his head up a little, Jesse looked her over and nodded. So he did recognize her. Here he'd thought he was just losing his mind. Even though he'd seen her around, perhaps in the hallway or at a show rehearsal when he was part of it, that didn't mean he knew anything about Hannah. His reply was typed quickly and he passed the phone off again.
"I thought I recognized you. I'm a junior. Music. You?"
Having passed off the only way to communicate, Jesse let his eyes wander. It had to be a crime for a place like this to be so damn loud. Why anyone enjoyed spending time in here was way beyond him. In fact, if it weren't for Hannah he'd be long gone. Then again, given the right company, it could probably be entertaining. He took another drink of whatever it was he'd been given. He probably shouldn't have trusted her so quickly, but she looked harmless. Then again, wasn't that just the way things worked? Jesse looked around once more before looking back at Hannah. How could she hear anything in here?

hannah watched as jesse looked up at her, and she tried to read his face in the dim light. though her vision was pretty perfect, even she couldn't see clearly in the light here. and so she glanced around the night club while jesse typed out a reply. he was a quick typer and hannah soon had the phone back in her hands. "i thought i recognized you. i'm a junior. music. you?"
so jesse was a junior? that made him in hannah's grade. she probably had seen him around then, maybe in a music class? though she was sure she would have recognised him. maybe it was just the lights, the noise, that had stoped her knowning who it was. or mmaybe she just didn't know him that well. she typed a reply, not as quick a texter as jesse was. "i'm a junior too. musical theatre." before she handed his phone back, she glanced around the club again.
surely there was somewhere quieter for them to go? hannah was well used to loud music by now, either from her time spent here or from the ear damaging volumes of her ipod, but that still made it impossible to talk to somene. she drew a blank. was there anywhere quiet here? she doubted it. "you don't know if there's anywhere quiet in here?" she added to the text message, before handing the phone back to jesse.

Break out! Break out!
Slowly drinking whatever it was he had, Jesse couldn't help but let his leg bounce to the drum beat. It was more just a reaction to the bass than a conscious decision. If he wasn't careful she might actually witness his sad sad attempt at dancing. And with his luck, she'd be a dancer. He accepted the phone back and scanned her message.
i'm a junior too. musical theatre.
Jesse smiled at her and took a drink. So he wasn't insane and he wasn't confusing her for someone else. She really was from Fates and even in his grade. That part threw him off, but he supposed there were plenty of people in the school he didn't know. For the most part, he really only knew people in his major. Looking at her again, however, Jesse noticed something very very familiar about her. it hit him rather suddenly too. She looked a whole lot like one of the girls he was living with. Then again, he hadn't been in his room long enough to actually meet the other occupants. He should do that one of these days.
you don't know if there's anywhere quiet in here?
Turning around completely, Jesse scanned the entire club. The speakers were actually fairly close to them. Spatially, didn't it make sense to be far away from them? Turning back to Hannah, he took her hand and made his way over to the other side of the club by the far wall. Leaning against it, he looked over at Hannah. "Can you hear me now?"

hannah took another sip from the drink in her hand. she didn't want to get completely drunk and make a fool of herself in front of not only the whole club, but this guy she was sure she knew from somewhere. apart from the obvious fact that she knew him from fates, she was sure she knew him from elsewhere. wasn't there a guy called jesse in her dorm? he didn't really hang out around the dorm much though. was this him? probably, hannah hadn't heard of too many people called jesse. she didn't really know him, so no time like the present to get to know him.
she followed him as he took her hand and pulled her away from the bar, which was next to the speakers and probably not the best place for a conversation, and towards the back wall of the club, where it was quieter. quieter by the night clubs standards, of course.
"yeah, i can," hannah grinned, trying to make herself heard over the music. she may be little, but she had a big voice, and she was pretty sure he would be able to hear her. she could hear him, after all. "do i know you? from more than just fates, i mean. aren't you in my dorm?" she wanted to know if she was right or not, or if she was imagining the wrong person.

Break out! Break out!
She could hear him. Success! At least he’d found a place where they could actually talk. Jesse checked the time before dropping his cell phone into his pocket and trying to hear her words. She had a shockingly loud voice for such a small person. It actually caught him off guard.
Jesse laughed at her question. Was she reading his mind or something? How had she continually asked the exact question he was thinking? He shook his head and looked back at the girl. Nodding he smiled. “I think we are in the same dorm. I was actually just thinking that myself. It’s like you can read my mind or something. I don’t know how comfortable I am with that idea.” He raised an eyebrow at her skeptically before laughing at himself. “Sorry. I’m kind of a big nerd. It’s why I don’t spend much time around the dorm. I don’t know how well I’d fit in. That and music is seriously all I do.”
Looking around the club, Jesse resumed bouncing his leg in time with the bass beat he could clearly hear over everything else. Returning his attention to Hannah he looked at her with a slightly curious expression. “So, you’re a junior? How’s musical theatre working out for you?” He immediately regretted his question choice and shook his head. “Sorry. I’m awful at small talk. Seriously.”

hannah grinned at jesse when he asked if she was reading his mind of something. "i'll let you in on a secret," she grinned. "i'm secretly magic! you know, like in harry potter? i've never read those books but i've seen the movies, they're pretty cool." hannah stopped there; she was sure jesse didn't want to hear her entire life story. not that she actually had a life story, considering her life was pretty much hang out at home until she was fourteen, come to fates, work her arse off, and here we are today.
"hey, nerds are cool, right? you know, the whole do your own thing and not care what anyone else thinks? that's awesome." hannah had wondered who the other person in her dorm was; he never seemed to be around. and now, she knew why. because he thought he was a nerd? "seriously, you should hang around the dorm more. we're pretty awesome. and you seem pretty awesome too. you'll fit in fine." hannah had to bite her tongue to stop herself adding the word babe on the end of the last sentence, but she wasn't sure how jesse would like being called babe by someone he didn't know.
hannah watched jesse bounce his leg, trying to think of something to say. jesse got there first, and she looked up at him before he realised she had been wawtching his leg. "hey, don't worry about it. musical theatre is hard. dance, drama and singing everyday? tiring! but worth it. how about music?"

Break out! Break out!
He laughed at her joke and nodded. Of course he knew Harry Potter. It was almost impossible to exist nowadays without at least having heard of it. Jesse may have been out of the loop, but he wasn’t completely detatched from existance. “I actually read them. I gotta say, if you’re a witch, you kinda just blew the whole secrecy thing. You’re lucky I know how to keep a secret.” He laughed a little and shook his head. “I don’t know what I’d do if you turned out to actually be magic. That’d be weird.”
When she made a comment, Jesse simply shrugged. “I guess we can be cool sometimes.” He looked around at the club and smiled to himself. He had a slight feeling Hannah thought he was staying away from them just for that reason. He could have corrected her, but there would be a time later that maybe he’d have the chance. Right now it didn’t make sense to just through it out there like he was defending himself. “Ha. Thanks. It’s always nice to hear I’m living with some cool people… even if all I’m doing in there is sleeping and not really living.” He shrugged again, not really knowing what he even meant.
When she answered, Jesse smiled. “That sounds tough. Music isn’t nearly as tiring. All I have to do is practice day in and day out on my different instruments. You know, get used to the sound of the ones here or tune them just right or memorize some song. It’s actually the whole reason I’m never around. There’s always something to do. I don’t think I coiuld do it if I didn’t love it the way I do. You know?”

hannah couldn't help but laugh at jesse. "if only! being a witch would be awesome tastic. i could just whip out my wand and zap all my homework done, all the right answers for once too. zap and clean my room, zap and do my hair! being magic must be so easy." hannah's imagination always did run away with her. but still, she knew she was right. being able to zap all her school work done would make so much more time for singing practice, dance classes, drama workshops. zapping her hair would make life so much easier, as would cleaning her room. magic must be awesome fun.
"well hey, i spend a lot of time in the dorm, not just sleeping. i pretty much live there, when i'm not around london or in some studio or other . . . which probably doesn't leave much time. still, you know what i mean." hannah had the feeling she was talking too much. but hannah frequently had that feeling; she learned to ignore it. if someone wanted her to shut up, they should just come out and tell her to shut up. if they didn't, there was no stopping her.
she nodded her head, she understood completely where jesse was coming from. if it hadn't been for the fact that she loved musical theatre in a way she wouldn't have thought possible, she knew she would have dropped out after a week. but her love for musical theatre, as well as her determination to make it, kept her going. "yeah, i know that. i would have dropped out ages ago if i didn't love musical theatre so much. it's tough, you know? but totally worth it." of course he knew, he was a student at fates. every student knew it was tough. but every student knew it was worth it. otherwise, why were they still there?
